How To Avoid Abrasion Damage On Hydraulic Hoses

Sep 22, 2026|

Abrasion is one of the most common causes of premature hydraulic hose failure in construction, mining and agricultural machinery. Constant friction between the hose and metal frames, cables, other hoses or sharp edges will gradually wear away the outer rubber cover. Once the outer layer is worn through, the steel reinforcement layer will be exposed to moisture, dirt and corrosive fluids, leading to rust, wire breakage, hose burst and unexpected equipment downtime.

Main Sources of Hose Abrasion

Metal Contact & Rubbing: Hoses often touch machine brackets, chassis and bolt edges during operation. Vibration makes them continuously rub against rigid metal surfaces. Sharp corners can cut the outer rubber quickly.

Hose-to-Hose Friction: Multiple hydraulic hoses bundled together will grind against each other when the machine moves. This situation frequently occurs on boom arms of excavators and loaders.

External Debris Impact: Sand, rock fragments and dust in harsh working environments keep striking the hose surface, causing slow erosion of the outer cover.

Improper Installation: Too little slack, tight clamping or wrong routing forces the hose to keep touching surrounding components during movement.

Practical Anti-Abrasion Solutions

Install protective sleeves: Textile abrasion sleeves and spiral plastic guards are widely used. They wrap around the hose outer surface and absorb friction, protecting the original rubber cover.

Adjust hose routing: Leave sufficient slack and clear separation gaps between hoses and metal structures. Avoid routing hoses across sharp edges. Add rubber pads at contact points.

Use abrasion-resistant hydraulic hoses: Special high abrasion resistant outer rubber compounds can greatly extend service life for heavy-duty applications.

Regular visual inspection: Check outer cover wear during daily maintenance. Replace the hose in advance if the steel wire layer is visible.

Optimize clamping method: Use rubber lined clamps instead of bare metal clips to prevent direct metal contact with the hose.

Important Reminder

Many operators only check hydraulic hoses when oil leakage appears. By that time, the reinforcement wire has already suffered serious damage. Early inspection and anti-wear protection can save far more maintenance cost and prevent dangerous hose burst accidents.
