How To Identify Abrasion Damage On Hydraulic Hoses And Protective Solutions
Oct 14, 2026| Abrasion is one of the most frequent causes of hydraulic hose failure. Constant friction between the hose outer cover and metal frames, adjacent hoses or sharp edges will gradually wear away the rubber outer layer. Once the outer rubber is worn through, the steel wire reinforcement becomes exposed, which greatly increases the risk of wire corrosion and sudden hose burst.
There are clear warning signs for abrasion damage. Visible scratches, thinning outer cover and shiny worn areas on the hose surface are early signals. If steel wires are exposed, this hose must be replaced immediately and cannot continue working. Many operators ignore minor surface scratches, which eventually develop into costly breakdowns.
Multiple practical protection methods are available. The most common solution is to install abrasion-resistant sleeves or spring guards on high-friction sections. It is also important to optimize hose routing to separate hoses from metal surfaces and avoid direct contact. Adding rubber pads between hose clamps and hoses also helps reduce friction damage.
Regular visual inspection is essential. Check hose wear condition during daily maintenance, especially for hoses near hinges, boom joints and moving parts. Choose hoses with enhanced abrasion-resistant outer cover if your equipment works in rocky, dusty construction sites.
Abrasion damage develops slowly, but it is predictable. Early detection and protection can avoid unplanned shutdown and oil spill accidents.
