Ozone Damage To Hydraulic Hoses: Causes, Signs And Protection Measures
Oct 17, 2026| Ozone damage is a common but easily overlooked failure mode for hydraulic hoses, especially for equipment operating outdoors. Ozone in the air reacts with rubber outer cover, triggering chemical cracking on the hose surface. This type of crack usually appears as fine, straight surface fissures, perpendicular to the hose length.
Ozone concentration rises under strong sunlight, high temperature and dry climate. Rubber under slight tension is more vulnerable to ozone attack. Even if the hose is not under working pressure, long-term outdoor storage or static placement can still generate ozone cracks. Many customers mistakenly attribute these cracks to mechanical aging.
To prevent ozone cracking, select hydraulic hoses with ozone-resistant outer rubber. Special compounded outer cover can greatly slow down the chemical reaction with ozone. During storage and idle periods, avoid exposing hoses directly under strong sunlight. Cover spare hose assemblies with opaque protection materials. Reduce unnecessary stretching of hoses during installation.
Regular inspection should check for tiny surface cracks, especially on hoses installed on outdoor construction machinery. If ozone cracks are visible on the outer cover, the structural integrity of rubber has been damaged, and hose replacement is required promptly.
Ozone damage progresses quietly. It does not start with oil leakage. Early detection and ozone-resistant hose selection help you avoid unexpected hose failure on outdoor equipment.
